The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) promotes the establishment of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) to enhance the capability of existing observation networks and their future potential. In line with this priority initiative, WMO Regional Association II (Asia) resolved to launch the regional WIGOS project at its 15th session (December 2012, Doha, Qatar) to enhance the provision and quality of management support for NMHSs in surface, climate and upper-air observation.
Improvement of surface observation data quality is a major target among RA II Members, and this project is implemented in line with current conditions. The two specific goals are:
- Data quality improvement for Regional Basic Climatological Network (RBCN)/Regional Basic Synoptic Network (RBSN) stations
- Capability enhancement for the Tsukuba and Beijing RICs
The Japan Meteorological Agency’s RIC Tsukuba plays a pivotal role in the project, with results from its 2012 survey on meteorological instruments, calibration and training being used as a basis for a 2013 workshop and a 2015 report as detailed below.
